A Virginia woman who lost her hand in a shark attack is now crowdfunding to cover the cost of a prosthetic after her insurance provider denied coverage. Elisabeth Foley, 45, was severely injured in a shark attack on June 7 in Florida, which resulted in the amputation of her left forearm. Despite undergoing months of treatment, she still faces ongoing health challenges and is advised to get a myoelectric prosthetic hand for improved functionality.

However, her insurance company rejected the claim, stating the device was not medically necessary. Determined to regain some normalcy, Foley launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise $73,000 for the prosthetic, and within days, over $59,000 was raised. Medical experts say the prosthesis is crucial for restoring her mobility and independence.
